Why do Spider Veins Affect Women More than Men?

It is a fact that spider veins affect women more than men. Female cases account for approximately 70% of spider vein occurrences with the overall number likely as women continue to outnumber men over time.

There are correlations as to why women suffer from spider veins more than men with hormones being the leading culprit. Men are certainly affected due to aging and natural hormonal changes,  women suffer in greater numbers because of them.

Although hormones are found in the female body for many reasons, their primary function tends to be oriented toward giving birth and rearing a baby in its first year or so. There is really no clear cut reasoning as to why hormones bring on a greater incidence of vascular damage to capillaries, as a result of the necessary hormones needed for child-birth, but they are there.

Generally, the broken capillaries associated with pregnancy, weight gain and pressure subside after the child has been born, but they are more likely to return at a later date or birth as a result of showing up the first time.

Following Childbirth & Pregnancy

Once again, the appearance of spider veins does appear to be tied into childbirth as a women’s body makes the transition away from the hormones associated with pregnancy and breast feeding - particulary protruding veins on the breasts.

The onset of menopause - another major hormonal shift - is more often associated with outbreaks but is not the only reason, later in life, that spider veins appear. The general aging process, and life choices made up to that point, all tend to conspire to make appearance more likely. Smoking, excessive use of alcohol, sun exposure and damage all play a part as well.

Making good choices

Understanding female symptoms are more prone at certain times of their lives is a double edged sword. One side of the sword is that a woman knows that they are more likely to have spider veins while the other is that they can takes steps to lessen their chances of getting them.

A good skin regime and health care practices are the first steps to lessening the chance of damaged capillaries. Using a spider veins cream for women at the first sign of spider veins, staying out of the sun and avoiding long periods of standing on a prolonged basis are all good ways to lessen the chance of getting and/or getting rid of them much faster if they do appear.
